The Aura of Legitimacy

Business Strategy: The aura of legitimacy - Increasing Your Product Value At No Cost

Dealing with honesty and customer get what they pay for. (But they’re crazy to buy what you offer)

There are several different way to use this strategy. Although the method a bit different but it deliver the same result.

Example #1: Clothing Store

J&J selling their own design clothes and price range from $100-$200. When come to Sale Season, they can only give 10%-20% discount to all their clothes because their clothes are produced in high quality and by their own professional designer. They will make lost if they give 50%-70% discount.

But there’s a trick to give 50%-70% discount. They will buy other design clothes from other company and put their brand J&J on the clothes to claim as their own design. This is something like pay for private label. Consumer will never know this and won’t care about it because most consumers just want to buy the ‘brand’.

The ‘private label’ clothes are normal quality BUT they cannot sell below $100 because this will affect their own brand value. They also cannot sell for $100 above because the quality is not worth that much (If you’re selling overprice, this mean you’re cheating your customers). In order to make both balance, they decided to price the ‘private label’ clothes for $130 and give 60% discount. This way, they didn’t lower their brand value and also increase more sales.

Think about this, the consumers just can’t resist that the cloth price range from $100-$200 and now give 60% discount. So consumers will think this is a BEST DEAL.

This is a WIN-WIN business. The seller still remain their brand value, increase more sales and making good profits with the ‘private label’ product. The consumers are happy and they get what they’re paying for.

Example #2: Coffee

Big size and small size coffee are almost/ nearly the same costing for seller. The different is on the cup, it looks bigger. The rental, electrical and staffs all are fixed costing. Whether you have a good business or not, you still pay the same rental fee. If you can increase your sales, then you can lower your costing and increase profits.

When you order a small size coffee, the cashier will tell you that you can get the medium size by adding a dollar. Think about this, just one dollar you can get a bigger size. Great deal.

People who is doing restaurant business will know that adding extra won’t effect the costing. Use the bigger size of cup, adding extra coffee in it and it will look bigger a lot than the small size.

Same strategy also been using in Popcorn business. You buy a normal size of box popcorn for $8 and you get bigger size by adding extra $2 dollar, and the bigger box look bigger a lot than the small box. Seller make extra profits and buyer get better deal. This is also WIN-WIN deal.

The Easiest Method To Include An Up-sell

Amazon does it, EBAY does it, so why can’t you?

After all, up-selling is a technique employed by leading e-commerce sites to boost their sales and though you may be some light years away from them, this could be used by you effectively too. And though this is a technique, there is not a lot different from up-selling and selling by themselves!

There are many ways you could up-sell a product, but before we get into knowing the easiest method, know that an up-sell is a product you wish to sell immediately after he has bought the first one. Needless to say, the second product or the product to be up-sold has to be related to the first product bought by the customer.

To the point – The easiest method to up-sell is to work on the ‘checkout’ page!

What you can do with the Checkout Page?

I’m not asking you to redesign the entire webpage. Follow this process to uncover the easiest method to up-sell.

First, identify your webpage which you want to include the upsell. It could be your product page, salesletter page, your newsletter subscription page, your thank you page and so on.
 
Then just add an option for them to include MORE products before they ‘checkout’.

So if it’s a newsletter subscription page, ask them if they want to include a free trial offer to your other paid product before they click “Register” on your newsletter page.

If your page is a salesletter webpage, give them an option to include another of your product before they click the “Order Now” button.

Here’s another example – if your webpage is a shopping cart, you can always ‘upsell’ your prospects for them to add more quantity of the product that they’re buying.

The list goes on.

Here are some things you would like to watch out for while up-selling:

==>  The product you up-sell needs to be somewhat related to the product the customer bought. The closer the correlation, the better it is for you because you’ll get more sales.

==>  Write your up-selling ad as carefully and diligently as you would have designed your sales ad. Just the fact that the customer bought one product from you doesn’t mean he is sure to buy another!

==>  Up-sell but don’t push – Pushing is bad for any form of selling and the same applies in up-selling too. Inform the
customer about your product and leave the choice to him. Also, bear in mind that you’re adding more value to your customer by offering greater solutions to them in your upsell products.

The method to up-sell your product is not as tough as you would have thought it to be. Basically, if you’re not integrating any upsell in your sales funnel, you’re literally losing money.

It’ll cost you more time, effort and money to acquire a new customer compare to selling to an existing customer who already trust you and like your product.

Although the technicalities surrounding the deal make it a slightly tough nut to crack, but I can tell you that it’s worth your time to explore this powerful marketing strategy.

Storyteller Marketing: Scary Tactic

Have you heard of Storyteller Marketing?

Instead of keep on telling how good is your product why not use other way to sell your product? People use to say their product is the greatest and no other product can compare. Look at the advertisement around you and you will find out there are many company sell the same concept like this…

“We’re No.1 in this industry”
“The greatest product ever”
“The best program in Asia” 
and many more…

So who is the greatest and No. 1 actually? Everyone saying they’re No.1 or the greatest but who can proof that they’re actually the No.1 and the greatest?

Prospect already boring with this kind of marketing. I personally feel funny when I heard an old lady talk to a kitchen sales person in the morning market. She said “You guys always say we’re the best, so who is the best actually?”.

Whatever you say, make sure you do not set a trap for yourself to jump into it. (smile)

Let’s come back to Storyteller Marketing…

I saw a company applied this very well in a magazine advertisement. The company sell healthy cornflakes for breakfast. They advertised full page and it’s totally do not look like an advertisement but a news.

The advertisement start with telling the worst cases if you do not take your breakfast everyday. They also explain why everyone should take breakfast and the benefits. They use more on scary tactic in the story. Just like this — if you do not take breakfast often, your body will lose the XXX vitamin and you will sick.

So in the reader’s mind will float with this “Oh my god, I don’t want sick and I afraid to go to hospital and blah blah blah”. Reader will imagine their own scary scenario after reading the story. This is just like the ghost story. After listen to the ghost story, most girls will imagine a lot of funny scary scenario like maybe the ghost is hidding in the toilet or it’s outside the window….? (smile)

If your story can make the prospect create their own imagination — you WIN.

Their mind will hardcoded with your story and follow whatever you say. After telling the story, you must come out solution. That’s your product. So you will tell your prospect that this product will solve their problems. You see, you’re now telling the prospect that your product can solve their problems instead of telling them your product is the greatest and the No.1 brand.

How great and No.1 brand are nothing to do with your prospect. It’s none of their business so they will not care if your product is No.1 or No. 2 but they just care if your product can solve their problems.

Marketing: Boost Your Sales Target

I love marketing.

You can do many things with marketing like advertising, event, party, flyer, cold call and etc.

Today, I want to share with you a very cool tactic to instantly boost your sales target within a short period of time. Let me start with offline marketing…

If you’re running a restaurant, you can sell membership card or voucher. That’s seem like just normal? Read this…

“Get Paid $100 Enjoy In My Restaurant”

It seems like a scam or hype. But it’s real. The tactic is this – You sell a membership card for $300 but you give $400 credit to your customer. This mean they get extra $100 for free. If you have 100 customers sign up to your membership card, then you will instantly have $30,000 for your company. Some people might think that this is too crazy to give away $100, of course you need to do the math if your business still make profit if you give out $100. I believe if your customer spend $400 in your restaurant, then you at least make 50% profit = $200, but you have already giveaway $100 to your customer, so your net profit will be $100. (Just work out the math)

Think about this, not all 100 customers will spend all the money within a month. Ask yourself, will you spend all $400 in the same restaurant within a month? Before the customers spend all the money in your restaurant, I believe your company will use that money to reinvest into other investment. There are many company not just doing business but also running investment at the same time like stock market, properties and etc.

When you got $30,000 for your company, and you just keep it in the bank, then this is just stupid. You have to reinvest the money to grow more money. Of course, don’t do the high risk investment.

I hope you see my point how to instantly boost up sales target. It’s just about ‘quantity’. You make less profit from each customer but you make more from all the customers.

Come from online industry…

If you’re selling digital product, you have pay nothing if extra 100 people buy your product. You don’t have to pay for printing cost, shipping and etc. So why not do a special promotion to combine several of your products into a big package for a special price?

Like, each of your product sell for $47. Now you pack 4 of them into a package and sell for just $67. This will instantly boost up your sales. That’s too crazy, if buy them separately, the price will be $188 but now for just $67. This tactic work and proven success. Of course, do not do this too often otherwise your customers will not feel special anymore.

Whether it’s online or offline, some of the tactic cannot use too often otherwise will not work in the future. You have to make your customers feel ’special’ and only for limited time. Try this and let me know your feedback. Thank you!

2009: Internet Marketing Promotion Bonus

Last 3 days ago I received an email from my existing customer.

The email started with “Sean, what are your bonuses for MME4?”

Let me explain what is MME4, the full name is Marketing Main Event 4 created by Jeremy and Simon. Based on what I have read from the salesletter, it’s a turnkey system – ready made membership site. The membership sites are all ready to go. Cut in short, you’re buying “business-in-a-box”.

Okay, I’m not promoting MME4 today and I want to explain why I didn’t do promotion for JV Partners recently. It’s not their products not good but I have my own reason not promoting.

You see, there are more than 5 products about internet marketing release every single month. This is a never ending game and I don’t think you like to receive promotion after promotion from month to month.

I don’t want my subscribers get information overloaded and I even don’t want my subscribers just keep on reading marketing materials without taking action. If you have bought a marketing course and it contains 20 videos, 3 PDF books, 10 MP3 audio and etc. Tell me, how long you will finish all these information?

Based on my survey result, 8 out of 10 people never finish the course.

There are 3 common reasons -

1. They didn’t see the result after studying the course for 2 month
2. They were attract by other marketing course
3. They’re looking for magic button but not course

Hey, if you never take action then how do you see result? This is true, if you just STUDY without take action, then you’re not going to see anything in return. You’re not going to get result by buying the course but take action only.

If you have bought some courses previously and still haven’t get result. I suggest you stop buying any course or product and think carefully to find out your problems. You could be fall into one of the categories above. If you’re not interested to study the big course, then just take the small course that will just take you about 2 weeks to complete.

Some courses just have a small package like 5 videos, 2 PDF and 5 Mp3 where you can finish all the information within 2 weeks or a month. This way, you can start to take action after 2 weeks.

You might see some people invest many money into courses month after month and they still make a lot of money or get the result they want.

Are they genius? Absolutely NO.

I buy many many courses and books from time to time. Average 1 new book per month. The subjects include self improvement, business management, sales marketing, multi level marketing, internet marketing, advertising and etc.

Honestly, I never finish all the books and courses information. Only some books I like then I will read them until the end of the page. Like, Donald Trump “Think Bigs” book. The book interest me because it was their real life stories and experience.

The rest of the books and courses, I just grab the information I want. What does that mean?

Some books and courses have the information I want to learn or know about. So I will buy it and just learn THAT information I want. If the book chapter 4 has the information I want, then I will just read the chapter 4 and ignore the rest. If I need to finish ALL the books and courses information I have bought, then I don’t need to do business anymore and will take me many years to complete.

Have you notice that? If you keep on buying information and study all of them until the end, then you’re not going to get result. Just study what you need from now.

Building Business Relationships

This is one of the most important lesson for doing business in offline or online world.

It doesn’t matter what business you do, relationship play the most important role in doing businesses. If you don’t know the company director and you suddenly pop up to their company and approach them your product, guess what? You will be rejected or kick out of the business.

If the Director is your friend, then it’s much easier to approach him your product. You save many steps to do business with him. You doesn’t need to wait 2-3 hours in their company just to see them and not even waste entertainment fee on them.

Remember this “Before business, friend first”

You need to make friend with those business person before you try to approach them your product/ businesses. That’s several ways to make friend with them without spending much money.

Remember, you do not need to always buy them lunch or dinner or any entertainment fee. Otherwise people will know that you’re trying to good with them.

To be a friend, we are sharing what we know and help each other.

How to make friend with those business person?

Find out their interest. What they like to do when they’re free. Like playing golf? hiking? playing badminton? tennis? and etc.

If they’re any member of the club like Lion Club, then you can join too so you can make friend with them. Find out what they do and what they like. Find chances to make friend with them.

When you’re trying to make friend with them, make sure you do not contribute too much on them, like always buy them lunch, dinner or entertainment. This doesn’t help you. How you can make them like you very much is how you can help them when they have problems. (I’m not referring to money problem)

Example: He/ she has a kid want to study in ABC high school but the school management reject their request because of some reasons (maybe poor of results). If you can help them get into that school, then they will very appreciate you. They will feel that you’re a person that able to solve problem so they have no worries to make friend or business with you.

When someone say the “easiest way” to make money online, most people will say affiliate marketing and google adsense.

Affiliate marketing and Google adsense are not my recommendation to someone newbie to get started with.

If you have some skills like:
- design graphic
- writing salesletter
- setup website
- create wordpress theme/ plugin
- audio transcript
- translate languages
- many more.

Then I suggest to provide services to make quick and solid cash.

Think about this, you don’t need to hire anyone to create product, writing salesletter, design your product minisite/ ecover/ banner to start making money by selling the product.

Now you can start making money from zero cost by providing services.

If you know how to manage your services, you can make a solid cash and earn this full time income.

Example: I knew there are a lot of graphic designer compete the design fee like $27 for an ecover.

If you know how to manage your business, you can charge $47 for an ecover. Or you can even charge a design project for $500- $1,000. It’s depend how you manage your business and how you do your business.

You cannot simply charge premium fee to your customers when you just started. However, there’s a way you can do this if you know how.

Also, if you provide services to marketer, you can build relationship with them as well. This is also the easiest way to build relationship with “Internet Gurus”. (smile)

Pick the right product to resell

This will be benefit for those who resell product on the internet.

There are tons of resale rights products on the internet but if you pick the wrong product to sell, then you will not make much profit.

Let me take some example to describe this.

When I was started as a newbie to resell product on the internet, I picked graphic product to resell and make some good amount of money. Afterward, I tried to resell some ebook the topic of ‘How to make money online’ like Affiliate marketing, Google adsense, Google adwords and etc. Guess what? The profit I made not enough 1% of my graphic product income.

There are numerous of reasons why the ‘How to make money online’ products are not selling well.

1. I’m a newbie (nobody know who is Sean Tan in 2006)
2. The resale rights products (How to make money online) most are theories ebook.
3. Thousands of reseller selling the same ebook and playing the price war (some even selling $1)

The ‘How to make money online’ topic has a wide range of customer base. You could sell to anyone that who want to make money online like housewife, student, teacher, internet marketer, taxi driver and etc.

The products will be everywhere on the internet and reseller are just keep the price cheaper than each together to get a sale. Why? Because they have no confident with the product. Make sense?

Like the reseller sell an ebook teach how to make $10k on the internet for $10 each copy. When they saw other sell cheaper than him, then they will put down the price again to against the other.

Think about this, “Why they want to sell cheaper to get a sale if the ebook content is real deal?” Because the ebook content suck and that’s just a game to make money online and some even include resale rights to the ebook so you can sell to the next victim. (smile)

Most of my products are tools, service and information. What does that mean?

Why I don’t sell niche product? This will be same as the ‘How to make money online’ issue.

Let say I have an ebook teach about ‘Dog training’. This is not easy to sell, because you will need to do article marketing, newsletter to provide some tips and advise to build up relationship with your reader and customers. This way, you can make some good money with that topic of ebook. (I’m not interested in those niche products, so I don’t spend my time to do all these)

If you’re selling tools like software and script, then it’s more easier to sell without doing much marketing. You doesn’t need to be an expert of the software to resell but at least know the basic how to use it.

Note: Not all the tools will make you good money but you will need to manually pick a good one to resell.

Here are some of the requirements you will need to know when you want to resell a product.

1. The product is not resell everywhere on the internet that anyone can easily find it on the search engine.
2. You doesn’t require to be an expert of that topic to resell.
3. It must be a quality product that you satisfied.

I have several products reselling on the internet that charge above $40-$67 for each copy. I’m not the creator of that product but I can resell for such price because I have done the research of that product and understand how quality of that product.

This is far more better than selling those $5 crappy products. For a $67 product, I sold just 10 copies and I already made $670 profits to my pocket. If you’re selling the $5 crappy product, you will need to sell 134 copies to make $670. Do you see the different?

I sell just 10 copies but you need to sell 134 copies. (which one do you prefer?)

Think carefully when you buy resale rights product. Read the product and do the research if this product will make you good amount of money. Otherwise, don’t waste your time to resell the crappy product that only make you little money that only enough to pay your electrical bill.
